2010-08-07 - Siberie Amsterdam

This is one of my favorite places to play. The people who come here very relaxed, and everyone's enjoying the atmosphere in this really nice coffeeshop straight in the center of Amsterdam. They usually play laidback or groovy music there, and sometimes there's a DJ.
I like to play mainly downtempo and chillout there, a little bit like when I play in the Kokopelli (see other performances). Nevertheless, I really try to focus on good music for inhaling sacred plants and revitalizing yourself with the soothing harmonies of triphop, ambient and a bit of soulful hiphop, some ballads, sometimes a bit of oldies... I really get to do my thing here, so if you have the chance, come and have a drink and a smoke.
By the way, let me take this opportunity to make clear that I thoroughly prefer smoking through a purepipe rather than a rolled combination with tobacco. I do smoke tobacco sometimes, but it has to be a brand where they spent at least a little bit of time thinking about the ethics and the true quality of the plants you want to inhale, such as American Spirit and Manitou.
But in general I never combine with tobacco, and I strongly recommend everyone to at least try this for a while, so that you know what the sacred plant does when you don't polute your mind with commercial tobacco fumes, of which I understand the average smoker receives in one year the same amount of radiation that somebody receives who gets around 250 chest x-rays a year. The safety measures around chest x-rays are such that in general you're not supposed to have more than 5 or 10 or something, because it becomes way too dangerous.
And the least damaging use of one of the most generous species alive is to vaporize it, so you only inhale the vapor of the plant - the oily essence that contains all the psychoactive ingredients, and all those lovely sweet, citric, entrancing flavours.

1-5-2008 -- Yeah, the info is kinda vague so far... Date is not sure yet. But the point is: some people want to pay for my airplane ticket to Lithuania if I play on their festival! I'm very happy with this, because this is the first time that my music gets rewarded with a trip, as in geographically repositioning my physical body.
I am looking for more gigs like this. I can offer to play as many days and hours as you wish.
In Lithuania I'm expected to give a liveset, Izmar-style. We didn't really talk about it much yet, so I only have some vague outline information right now. But I think I'm very free in what I can do there. Perhaps I'll be able to get my sitar in playable shape, in time. In any case I'll bring over an Ableton Live gig with many midi controls. As to the sitar, I have a usable piezo pick-up element, but I yet need to string it and repair some parts. It's not going to be an easy job, since my sitar has 17 strings, which is very normal for a sitar. Many even have 18 or 19 strings in total.
I will definitely do my blend of cinematic, melancholic, trancy, breakbeat-driven triphop, inspired by the excellent old guys at mowax, ninja, but also mos def, thievery, etc. etc. And I'll also add a lot of trippy spacy ethnic vibes. Yes... also with breakbeats.... And lots of long sweeping reverbs and ping-pong delays, as you know from my style, soothing you deep down inside...

I'm also part of an ambient chillout DJ collective called Clan of SPeace, which is a part of the Namaste party organisation, who also do the Chaishop world music jamsessions in all 4 of the Rokerij coffeeshops in Amsterdam.
For Clan of SPeace I play my usual mix of harmonic chillout and downtempo. Even though Rokerij is located in one of the most commercial parts of Amsterdam, the decoration and music is such that you can do some serious hemp sessions there.

2008-03-01 - Paradiso Amsterdam
So... the Overtoom 301 303 acid party was rocking everyone's pants off and turned everyone's brain into a sonic warble of Roland TB-303 ultra-mesmerizing-butt-groovin' overtone-madness. So much should be clear when there's a proper acid party in Amsterdam, and my friend Alex sure knows how to get the right people and gear together.
The whole thing was nominated for this local little prize thing, Golden Gnome (Gouden Kabouter, actually, because Dutch people do speak Dutch sometimes, even in Amsterdam) awards. This event started out as a kind of joke to take the piss out of I don't know who, but these days it's like they also have some serious ones to show honest appreciation. At least, that's what I've been told. So it's supposed to also be this thing where new electronic and dance music events get the chance to get more attention.
Anyway, the party was cool and there are 2 more acid parties planned. For now. Anything can still happen, but I'm gonna focus on getting my shit together for the next liveset, because to be fully honest, things went only 5% the way I planned with my Overtoom 301 liveset.
I was in some kind of dark phase for a couple of months, and even my gear got infected. I had 2 PC motherboards crap out on me in the past 2 months, a bunch of videocards got killed, my dear spirit folio mixer that I've owned for half a decade with selfmade wooden sidepanels rather than the stupid plastic standard ones died 3 hours (!) before my performance commenced.
There are many ways to do a liveset, and mine depended partially on the mixer I brought with me. They gave me a 50% working Behringer as a replacement. But I also found out the mappings of the faderfox I borrowed from a friend to control Ableton Live were mostly lost. And more things were basically standing in the way, it was pretty amazing. The first tune I played was The Empty Vision. I can imagine you don't fancy it as an acid track, but you should 've seen the angry look on the face of this girl that came yellin and complainin at me when the track was 20 seconds from finished.
Then the pounding acid started and I think most people on the dancefloor had a good time. But most of the liveset I was fighting problems with my setup. Nevertheless, check out part of the liveset on myspace.com/aciiiiiid
So... none of that stuff in the Paradiso basement - I'll come prepared this time. I heard my friend Matthijs is coming all the way from Delft to give a liveset this evening as well. He's the guy I made one XS-recording track with (see releases). I haven't talked to him about it, but I'm pretty sure he's got at least one TB-303 and 1 TR-909, and I'm also pretty sure he's going to bring them over for his gig.

2008-02-09 - Rokerij Amsterdam
I'm also part of an ambient chillout DJ collective called Clan of SPeace, which is a part of the Namaste party organisation, who also do the Chaishop world music jamsessions in all 4 of the Rokerij coffeeshops in Amsterdam.
For Clan of SPeace I play my usual mix of harmonic chillout and downtempo. Even though Rokerij is located in one of the most commercial parts of Amsterdam, the decoration and music is such that you can do some serious hemp sessions there.
